Strange Beak

The strangest thing happened today.. I went to the park to find a blip and there was NOTHING. I took 3 pics and they were of nothing.. Then I thought to myself "Self... relax and a blip will come to you." About 2 minutes later 4 of these flew into a tree above me. I thought I had my blip but when I walked a little further, I saw a flash of red in a tree and caught the blipped bird. I didn't realise how interesting it was till I got it on the computer when I got home. I checked and the other bird on Flickr is a Bohemain Waxwing.

I know there are a lot of bird savvy blippers. Is this bird's beak supposed to be like that? I can't imagine it surviving if it's not.. but who knows.

EDIT: Thanks squirk. While you were writing your comment I did a little research myself.. It's a red crossbill.
