Sore thumb

Jakartans always like to remind non-Indonesians that they are non-Indonesians, by whooping as they drive past, and by heckling 'hello misterrrr'. Even in the most expat area or next to one of the main universities, where foreigners are a common sight.

In Phnom Penh, people are generally much more passive and let you go about your business. Although I can't vouch for the experience of women in either place.

Every time I am somewhere like Jakarta my head spins thanks to a grass-is-always-greener mentality and the certain lure of Asia. Traffic chaos vs sedate cycling / dirt cheap taxis vs horrific fenland winds / inspiring and encouraging chats vs collegiate atmosphere / damp sultriness vs icy winds / Asian landscapes vs European cities / extreme highs and lows vs pedestrian pleasantness
