Dwarfed

Constructed in 1912, Karka is a large recreational pavilion typical in size to others throughout the Belair park but quite unique in design. Although basically a shed, its main (western) facade contains many elements typical to the style of domestic Edwardian architecture of the time, with stepped gables, carved corbels and ornately detailed window heads.

It originally boasted leadlight panels to the windows and fanlights. Unusual for a corrugated iron roof, the bottom sheets have been kicked up using tilting fillets to continue the effect created by the ornate gable barge ends. The building received a Heritage Commendation for its restoration in 2004. We have attended special functions there and it is an excellent building is a superb environment.
