I tried to spend the long journey back from Sri Lanka in transition.  I thought of all the winter delights I would find at home in the garden.  I tried not to think of the changes in temperature - 30 to 4 degrees (if we are lucky) - or from constant sunshine to days without seeing the sun at all.

The reality was saturated soil with little colour  I know folks have been talking about early flowering because of the mild weather.  It hasn't happened in my garden yet.

But there are still delights around and top of the list is the Witch Hazel with its extraordinary scented lemon flowers.
