Calke Abbey

Brilliant, bright sunshine - not to be missed, even on a day starting with a dental appointment.

My dentist is in Ashbourne - and today is the day after Pancake Day. The infamous Shrovetide Football Game goes on for two days and everyone  (apart from those indulging in the festivities) gets out of the way before it kicks off - if that's the right word. I remembered as soon as I arrived in the car park. The Co-op windows, and those of every other place in reach, were fully boarded up or criss-crossed with strong planks. Yesterday the "Uppers" were the victors - and the chaos continues today.

I drove to Calke Abbey, knowing that the house and gardens were closed, but hoping to spend some time in the Bird Hide.  No chance - it was packed. I had a lovely wander around, along the exit route, and saw some different angles of this amazing National Trust property.

I chose this photo because I felt it showed the fascinating curves and contours of the landscape.

Extra photos - a nuthatch, from outside the hide
                        - another view of the park.
