Sgwarnog: In the Field

Memories of Music

ripples
in the lake
memories
of yesterday's
music

I arrived a little early for a meeting in Huddersfield, so I thought I'd explore Greenhead Park. A more sensible option may have been to spend my time out of the rain in the conservatory cafe at the entrance, but blips are not usually found in cafes.

The lake was gently spilling out onto it's perimeter walkway, you can see the paved edging at the bottom of the image. On the other side stands the Japanese bandstand, of which a handy interpretation board said this:

"Designed by Borough Engineer Richard Dugdale in a Japanese style, and built by Joseph Brearley, the bandstand is an original feature of the Park, and band concerts were held from the Park's first summer in 1885.

In just one year, 1920, there were 68 afternoon and evening concerts between June and September, drawing large crowds, many of them enjoying the concert from across the lake. After the invention of wireless (radio) transmission, speakers here were used for broadcasting, with concerts and football finals in the 1920s, King George V's jubilee message in 1935 and the Coronation of King George VI in 1937 all being relayed from the bandstand."

Dance to the music of time.
