BIKE-RACKS & CLOISTERS

These 'birds' are bike racks for students at the University of Queensland. Why birds? Well, very close and under the nearby bushes are a colony of a native birds, the stone or bush  curlew.   It has the eccentric habit of nesting on the ground in quite exposed places and freezing rather than running when disturbed. So its is quite vulnerable. The curlew is handsome, about 12" or 30cm tall, with a large eye and long skinny legs. 

The extra shot is one of a length of the cloisters around the Great Court. The main building and cloisters are built of sandstone quarried from Helidon about 80km away.
There is an annual race around the cloisters. An imitation of one at Gonville and Caius  College at Cambridge University. [Remember the race in 'Chariots of Fire'?]
