Lacock (Wednesday 3rd February 2016)
I called in at Lacock Abbey for the first time this year the other day. I always hope to see their Smokey-alike there but hadn't seen her on my last few visits as it was more the weather for curling up on an Aga. This time I was luckier and she came running up along the path that leads from Bide Brook, miaowing a greeting.
No-one at Lacock Abbey knows the name of this cat as she lives in one of the nearby houses. My own nickname for her was Whitetip (because of her tail) and at the Abbey she's known as the Abbess, because of her appearance, but the head gardener calls her Smokey.
This makes her the third grey-and-white cat I know of that name, because as well as my own male Smokey, my Blipper friend in Grand Rapids MI, ionnature, has a female Smokey of her own.

Elvis Presley - Black Star (recorded 8 August 1960, Radio Recorders, Hollywood CA)
It's generally thought that Elvis' best acting role was in Flaming Star. The film had the working title of Black Star and this song had been recorded as the theme, but had been re-recorded with a revised lyric after the title change, so went unreleased at the time.
Much has been made of the links between this and David Bowie's 2016 album Blackstar, given that he and Elvis shared a birthday and that Bowie was a huge fan., Bowie's song Blackstar is littered with coded references of one form or another, but I will leave that whole area alone.
This LOTD first appeared on an earlier date but has been moved to accomodate a date-specific replacement entry.
