Art Review
The authenticity of a piece of art lay in its directness and immediacy of expression.
Using wide and rhythmic sweeps of dollar-store markers, Jack created this alien head on a giant piece of brown wrapping paper. Working in a spontaneous, improvisatory manner, Jack gave the alien abstract ears, (mistakenly cut coffin post-production), a small nose, and a fierce mouth.
The scale is huge, and his iconoclastic production method is as important as the work itself. The “all-over” shapeless character flows beyond the brown paper canvas, jettisoning all traditional concepts of composition, space, volume and depth,. The flatness of the picture plane takes center stage. Only the eyes and mouth are filled with color, and the edges of the head blur into soft-focus. This blurring of edges makes the color seem to float.
