Waiting….
The action at the bird feeders varies according to the type of bird. At the suet feeder hanging from a branch of the plum tree, the creepers seem to be most successful, since they can cling to it both upside down and right side up. The black headed juncos wait in the tree and dart in one at a time to grab a morsel. The woodpeckers sit on top and lean down as far as they can without falling off, while the jays and the crows helicopter up and flap wildly to stay suspended long enough to snatch a bite.
The finches, chickadees and goldfinches occupy themselves at the seed feeder, while the doves and squirrels clean up on the ground. The quail seem to be constantly in transit. They rarely fly but walk up the stairs in a stately manner while one of their number keeps a lookout from the birdbath.
If I turn my head to look out the front door I can watch the birds bathing in the fountain. Neither OilMan or I really liked the three basalt columns with water trickling out of one of them, but the birds enjoy bathing in it so much that we have left it just as it was when we moved in. Three Western Bluebirds watched from a good vantage point on the garage roof today for their turn to bathe. They certainly aren't macro, but in the grand scheme of birds, they are pretty tiny. Thanks to trisharooni fro hosting this month.
All this bird activity is just right for me right now as I am in semi hibernation trying to finish knitting a wool cardigan before spring arrives….
