Restored

With the new kid on the block in the shape and fury of storm Henry stomping at the door and unleashing battering stair rods of rain, His Lordship and I were lucky to escape most of the wetting by being on a bus.
We were on a mission which took us to the west end of Portobello prom before being blown along past these restored pottery kilns in Pipe Street.

The kilns were built in 1906 and 1909, and are the last two surviving pottery kilns in Scotland. They are all that remains of the Buchan Thistle Pottery which closed in 1972 before relocating to Crieff. Rumour has it that my late Mama went on a date with one of the Buchan brothers- can't ask her about that now.
The kilns were taken over and maintained by the City of Edinburgh Council as a permanent memorial to the once vibrant Portobello Pottery Industry.

These new modern flats have certainly got two very large reminders of a past age right in their field of vision.

Despite the gusts of wind and squalls of rain, the sea was fairly calm with no dramatic waves and of course the tide was out, as it very often is when I venture to the seaside.
