With the 'red duster' (red ensign) flying, this is Newport's memorial to all that the British Merchant Navy has done for the Town & for the Nation

By Seb' Boyesen & inaugurated on 28 April 1991, it comprises of a bronze scultpture of a navigator, sitting on a sphere & with a sextant is his right hand.  The statue is placed on a column of 7 m high.  At the base of the column are sculptured stone elements related to shipping in wartime, such as an anchor, torpedo & a gun.
