Woodwork.....

It has been quite surreal so far this week at work as more and more people are commenting (nicely) on my departure in a fortnight's time. I have been going through my stuff that I have brought in over the (6 1/2) years.

This little sculpture was the first thing I ever made in woodwork (before it changed to D&T) at a pre-teen age of ten. I will never forget the sound of the sanding maching (and the smell of burnt wood), the band saw, the twanging of the coping saw, the smell of wax and the frustrations of the woodwork teacher trying to find the right sized drill bit for my specific demands! Using a morticer for the first time at the age of 11 was a truly memorable moment too: I mean, drilling SQUARE holes! And smelling the fresh pine afterwards. Aces.

We made all sorts of stuff: endless building/making, which schools nowadays wouldn't even dream of doing. It breaks my heart that schools rarely teach skills like this any more. And this new career move of mine will surely rekindle some of that magic I have been missing for sooo long.

I love D&T.
