In the evening the four of us attended a lecture at Abbie and Pippa's school by Paul Baeten, a survivor of the German camps in WWII.
Paul was 17 and at school here in Berchem studying Greek and Latin when he was arrested by the Gestapo in 1943 as he was distributing leaflets of the resistance. As political prisoner he was taken to the German labour camps in the 'Nacht und Nebel' campaign. He survived the horror of 4 camps and was close to death when his last camp (where they had to work on the V1 and V2 bombs) by the Americans.
His talk was harrowing not just of his story, but also of links he made to the current political landscape in Europe. We left the talk humbled...
