Chichicastenango

The people who live in this town in the mountains north of Lake Atitlan are nearly all Mayan and the large market held every Thursday and Saturday brings all the local people (and a few tourists) in.
This church standing at the entrance to the cemetery was obviously built as a catholic church but now it is used by the local people for their own Mayan version of the religion, with ceremonies conducted by shamans rather than priests.
