A hard night at the velodrome

Tonight Paladian and I were part of the camera team at the Adelaide Super-Drome to provide the international webcast of Australia's Bridie O'Donnell's attempt to set a new world one hour cycling record. We were flat out all night filming every race for the webcast.

It was an intense night for all of us. Paladian was the hard working production assistant for the team, meaning she was on her feet in the centre of the track for around 4 hours!

Bridie successfully broke the UCI world hour distance record for women, eclipsing the previous one by more than 609 metres, setting a new mark of 46.882 kilometres. It was my job to follow her bike, holding it in the centre of the frame, for every second of her gruelling 60 minutes ride. Bridie is a former National Rowing champion.

"I can't believe I broke a world record," said the 41-year-old after getting off her bike and hoisting it above her head at the end of her record-breaking ride. O'Donnell, a doctor, has represented Australia at three road world championships but said it was a matter of finding the right event for her, which is riding against the clock.

It was not possible for me to grab a photo of Bridie, but I did get this shot of Australia's top 2 female sprinters on the starting line. On the left is Olympic Gold Medalist ANNA MEARES and next to her is STEPH MORTON who was the winner on the night. Both are aiming for the Olympics in Rio.
