Red Bull Defiance
Today is Day 1 of the Red Bull Defiance teams race. They took a bus to near the head of Lake Wanaka, then crossed the lake on a barge. From Minaret Station they biked (23 k's), to West Wanaka Bridge. They ran over Rocky Mountain, abseiled down a 60 metre rock near Diamond Lake, ran around the base of Rocky Mountain back to West Wanaka Bridge. (9 K's). From there they kayaked to Glendhu Bay, (no distance given), and ran along the Millennium track to Wanaka township. (12k's).
I set myself up at Diamond Lake and watched the abseiling. You knew where the leaders were as a helicopter was overhead recording all the action.
My blipfoto is the competitors abseiling down the rock face.
1. Taking off their harnesses. (This was the first team through).
2. Continuing the run around the base of Rocky Mountain.
3. View of the rock face from Diamond Lake
After lunch I had a game or two of croquet, a lovely way to spend the afternoon.
