Day 022/16. Disk exposure.

I upgraded one of the hard drives on my PC a while ago. The old one was just not high enough speed or capacity for the job. Always an engineer I took the lid off to expose the innards. The core technology really does not change that much....just the efficiency.
I first started working on 'Winchester' sealed hard drives way back in about 1978 when a DEC RK05 disk pack would have a capacity of 1.5MB. When there was a 'head crash' we would take them apart and replace the heads and platter. This 'old' hard drive in the picture was 250GB so was more than  150,000 times the storage capacity of way back then. In about 1/50 of the space too. But no chance today to repair in today's throw away society.
Can anyone think of any industry that continues to advance as fast as computer storage? The replacement drive is 3TB by the way......another 12 x capacity in about 5 years.
Why the blue tint? Because I thought it looked the part...
