New Barnet's Old Gasometer

Unlike bare trees in winter
that, again, come into leaf,
New Barnet's old gasometer
will doubtless come to grief.

It won't be very long before
every one's torn down,
these shapely framed gasometers
in many an English town.

Their fine, black lattice branches -
like leafless winter trees
against a bright blue sky - such frames
add warmth to winter's freeze.

But New Barnet's old gasometer's
familiar shape will stay
in hearts and minds and photographs
long years beyond today.

Back in Devon now after a glorious drive home in bright, crisp sunshine, enjoying the shapes of bare trees against the blue sky. These, combined with my gasometer photo, inspired today's poem. (Wow! three ditties in three days! Whatever next?!)

It's several degrees warmer in South Devon than the rest of the country. Now that I've turned into a southern softie, that suits me just fine!
