Upside down Oamaru double ender

We came to see the colony of Blue Penguins and were not disappointed, though photography was not allowed. We spent more time, however, wandering through Oamaru's harbour district and dotted in and out of the grand Victorian buildings there, which now house an eclectic mix of Tardis like second hand shops, bicycle and boating museums, book binders, carvers, exotic clothing shops and a Steam Punk Museum. By the time we had eaten our dinner in the Last Post (previously the South Island's first Post Office) it had started to rain and was a bit cooler. Wearing all our warm clothing, we made our way to the viewing point for the Penguin colony and sat gently chilling as we watched the rafts of tiny Penguins make their way to the shore and then waddle, surprisingly sprightly at times, up to their nesting burrows. Another unique experience and well worth the effort.
As we drove home we started to understand why so many people were on the road outside wearing high vis vests - they were directing traffic to avoid the penguins who had decided to nest by the roadside. We now know what the elderly New Zealanders do to pass their time - they undertake charitable good works like this for the benefit of their local communities.
