I see quite a few local clocks but few by this maker. It is strange to think that each town had several clockmakers and many villages had one too. By the early years of the twentieth century, the name on the dial might be the retailer but an early nineteenth century clock like this would indicate the maker. Earlier clocks might even been made by the local blacksmith, whitesmith or locksmith but by this time clockmakers were well established as a profession making most parts themselves though possibly not the dials and increasingly they were probably finishing and assembling stock parts. Much of the history of clockmaking is somewhat vague but fascinating none the less.
