Lady Colorado

This is the fountain at City Park, donated by Joseph Addison Thatcher in the year of his death, 1918. A banker, he was instrumental in developing Denver into a center of business. Thatcher was also a prominent philanthropist and took pride in supporting the culture of his growing city.

The woman on the center pedestal of the fountain is Colorado herself. She is surrounded by the virtues of the state: Loyalty, Learning, and Love. Here, Love is pictured on the left, Learning on the right. Love is depicted as a woman glancing shyly downward with a man gazing at her on one side and a Cupid on the other. On the right, Learning is a woman with two children on either side of her, the boy reading and the girl writing on a small slate board. Loyalty lies behind the Lady Colorado (Who better to watch your back?), a knight clad in armor with a woman to one side, holding an olive branch to symbolize peace.

We usually go running at City Park, but today we finally had rain. We used it as an excuse to be lazy, and just stopped for a few pictures on the way home instead.
