337 Battery

Sometimes extraordinary things happen. The nature reserve where I volunteer was used by the military from at least Napoleonic times. We have the remains of an early field kitchen, extensive practice trenches from the First World War, a mortar range, trenches, ROC post and  searchlight battery encampment from the Second World War. A few years ago I tried to find out a bit more about the searchlight battery but got little further than that it had been manned by 337 battery of the 34th Searchlight Regiment. Then today came a knock at the door and a lady handed me two tattered old envelopes which she had found when clearing out the attic of her recently deceased uncle's house in the village. The two envelopes contained his researches on the ROC post and the searchlight battery including photographs, correspondence and interviews with former members of the unit stationed here. We will use the material to create a permanent display in our small museum in the local windmill.
