Shide

Shinto shrines are often decorated with these zigzag paper streamers, known as shide and are hung on a shimenawa, or rice rope.  They mark the boundary between the sacred and profane. They are designed to keep impurities out and to purify the space within and are believed to ward off evil spirits and sickness.

They can be seen at shrines all year around, but especially at new year.
