The Byrd Theatre
Carytown is often regarded as Richmond's "Mile of Style" due to the large number of boutique clothing stores in this stretch. You'll also find this area to be dense with restaurants and bars. Traffic doesn't die down around here until well after 2am.
Equally stylish is the Byrd Theatre, first opened in 1928 and nearly continuously open since. Had it been built today this "movie palace" would have cost roughly $11 million. How many movie theatres do you know that cost that much? Well, I doubt your local Regal cinema has an 18 foot crystal chandelier or a Wurlitzer organ (still in use, mind you!). On top of all that, this second run theatre still manages to show quality movies due to the state of the art Dolby sound system donated by Ray Dolby himself in 2006.
Watching a movie at the Byrd is not only a Richmond tradition, but nearly the same as walking into a time machine. I suggest watching "It's a Wonderful Life" on Christmas evening to achieve the full effect.
