"Deus nobis haec otia fecit"

Once every couple of months or so, I take the afternoon off, arrive in Liverpool for about half-three, and go out for a few drinks with my good friend, Bob. We've entered a routine now where I will walk from Lime Street, up Mount Pleasant, along Hope Street, and meet him in the Philharmonic pub for a couple of pints. From there, we'll usually go on for a bite to eat, have a couple more drinks, and then I get the train home at a fairly sensible time. 

There are lots of buildings in Liverpool that I didn't seem to notice when I was a student here. A while ago I posted a picture of the Irish Centre on here and, today, I noticed this building on the corner of Mount Pleasant and Oxford Street. To be honest, what grabbed my attention was the sunlight rather than the architecture but when I looked more closely, I could see some writing carved into the stone at the top of the building, which reads "Deus nobis haec otia fecit". 

My Latin's a bit rusty - I got a B at 'O' level - so I couldn't translate the whole phrase, so I Googled it as I walked along Hope Street. It means "God has given us these days of leisure". 

Amen to that.
