As I was lying in bed at 4:30 this morning and wondering if I would ever get back to sleep, I got the very clear answer "No".

It wasn't the ideal preparation for going back to work.

But I am made of sterner stuff these days and I was in the office at 7 as per the plan and the day started normally.  Cooleagues arrived and we had the usual round of "Happy New Year" and then I baffled them all by deploying the Scottish "Lang may yer lum reek!"

A lum is a chimney.  And if your chimey reeks, it has smoke coming out of it and it essentially means "health and happiness to you and your family".

However, what I didn't know until today is that there is a second part to that saying a.d it should read "Lang may yer lum reek wi' ither folk's coal".
You learn something new every day.

Because I was in the office nice and early, I could get away early and just caught the last of the sun on some newly sprouted grass in a field near the house.
