Part of local folklore

Most cities have something that has gained notoriety through the ages and continues to date. They are often decades or hundreds of years old but sometimes new things start off and quickly become tradition. This body part outside the High Court in Edinburgh looks like it is something that has happened for many years yet the 'tradition' of rubbing the toe of the statue of David Hume only began in 1997 when the Sandy Stoddart statue was erected.

It is ironic that Hume, a philosopher who strongly rebelled against superstitions should now become a subject for the superstitious to either gain luck before they enter the High Court or the scholarly advocates who rub the toe to gain knowledge from Hume.
