"Robinier False Acacia"

Jean Robin, a French botanist (1550 - 1629) planted this tree in Paris in 1602, beside the 10th century site of the  church St Julien le Pauvre.  It has suffered greatly over the past 4 centuries, but still lives.  Saplings are growing from its base and roots.

The botanist gave his name to the tree, which originated in the south east USA.
