Porcelain Fungus

or Oudemanseilla mucida.

Pleased I'd grabbed this in one of the days few brief dry moments - as I wasted far too long this afternoon hoping that the Firecrest Goldcrest* would hop into the light - but its been so dull & dark here today that even when he finally did I couldn't catch him, oh well - one for another day. Maybe.

It's a fascinating fungi this one - it releases strobilurins - a powerful fungicide - thus ensuring its gets its habitat (Beech trees) all to itself. Very very occasionally it can apparently be found on oak trees - but I've never seen that, it's got a distinctive appearance (kinda easy to see how it gets its name!) and unlike other fungi it doesn't change all that much - sadly however it's not reckoned to be worth tasting.

* seems much more likely!
