The Famous Pagefield Hotel
Built in 1902 the Pagefield Hotel is an impressive Grade II listed building. Sadly it's now just another pub that has seen better days here is the original much older building of the same name which it replaced.
There are at least another three blips to be had of the Pagefield, but this one of the original window of the 'News Room' and the back door is worthy of a blip in its own right. The 'News Room' dates back to the eighteenth century use of pubs for newspaper reading. It evolved into the taproom or vault patronized only by working class men and strictly no women allowed, hence the proximity of the back door.
The M M & Co refers to Magee Marshall & Co., Ltd, who completed the rebuilding of this impressive hotel eight years after purchasing the Wigan Brewery in King Street, and would have been their flagship hostelry in what was then a busy part of the town. Around the same time the company also bought and erected a large number of public houses in the Lancashire coast holiday resorts, including Blackpool and Southport. In 1959 it was acquired by Greenall Whitley & Company but brewing at the Crown Brewery on Derby Street in Bolton continued until 1970.
