Come on in - the water's lovely !
And so easy to be persuaded too and
encouraged by a crowd of more than
2000 - 120 good souls, unable to resist
the urge, charge 100 yards down
Scarborough's South Sands to celebrate
the New Year in the great tradition of a
plunge into the briny. Oil paintings depict
the earliest use of the bathing machine
on these Sands in the late 18th Century
to preserve the modesty of ladies as they
took advantage of the health restoring
properties of seawater bathing. I understand
from the organisers that there is, as yet,
no limitation on numbers so a cordial
invitation is extended to those wishing
to take advantage of these tax free benefits.
