Thank you very much indeed for all the kind comments over the last couple of days.
We had a trip to the garage at Inverness. An engine management light was staying on and apparently some engine sensor was faulty. They fixed it in about forty minutes.
Our friends (the ones who have Bob, Caley's brother) looked after Caley for the day which was very kind of them. I collected him late afternoon. Although he had a lovely day with plenty of exercise he still fancied a tramp up Maol Ruadh.
It got dark and very windy at the top. The camera tripod was vibrating in the gusts and I was repeatedly messing up camera and flash settings. This was possibly exacerbated by my fears that my head torch was about to go flat. Seated comfortably at the PC (and still hearing the wind roaring outside) I can easily figure out what I was doing wrong. Flash was firing on first and last curtain on long exposure but I have figured out why now. It also explains Caley's apparent mythical multiple heads,
