HM slept here...

.... Frequently, we are told. This is the Queen's cabin on the Royal Yacht Britannia, which we visited en famille today, courtesy of #2 son (Thanks, Ewan). We were all struck by the modest proportions of the Queen's bed - apparently partly as she wanted to use Queen Victoria's sheets. I imagine she grew up with this size of bed: we all did, in those straitened, pre-kingsize days.

It was fascinating- all of it - but I have to admit that the crew quarters were the more riveting . The visible reminders of hierarchy and privilege were everywhere, and that always makes me feel ... Uneasy.
