Phamous Phone Box
What with the weather being of the Scottish variety we headed out today to try and track down any sliver of sunshine we could. Didnae work.
Still, we had an enjoyable hour or so wandering around the aquarium in MacDuff feeling up the fishes and freezing our collective bits off staring out over the Moray Firth. We then took a drive along to the fishing village of Pennan, an adventure in itself with three cars descending down the narrow road down the cliffs to sea level where this telephone box is located. It's famous as one of the less animated stars of the film 'Local Hero' that was partly filmed on locations around the village back in 1983. It's one of my favourite movies and it was great to stop off here and wander along the solitary row of cottages along the beach. And, although I don't think this is the actual location of the telephone box in the film, it was nice to pop down and take a few pics and get a sense of why Bill Forsyth chose this out-of-the-way location for his film. A very sleepy feeling place nowadays despite its filmic history and unique personality.
By way of complete contrast we then headed along the coast to Fraserburgh with it's huge factory fishing boats crammed into the harbour. Far too cold to do anything other than wander the charity shops looking for a DVD copy of 'Local Hero', giving up and steaming up the car eating chips smothered in chippie sauce.
Hez and her boyfriend drove up in the evening to meet up with us, in the thick fog that had descended over the north east of the country, giving us a nice round dozen in the barn for breakfast. We all fancied some good and gothicy to watch as an accompaniment to the pea-souper outside so all sat down to watch 'Young Frankenstein'. It's become a bit of a tradition on our trips that has, and even the kids have began quoting lines from it.
Big day for some tomorrow and I'm on breakfast duties. Twelve plates of cornflakes coming up.
