Levada walk
We had our first experience of walking Madeira's levadas today - they are the irrigation channels (mini canals, really) that criss-cross the island, taking plentiful water from the mountainous, rainy interior to the dry coasts. Without them it wouldn't be possible for the island to support its population. And the thing is, they're HIGH UP - the first part of our walk was vertiginous, a narrow path and a sheer drop. No handrails, no safety nets. Good job we're both OK with heights!
