Life in Newburgh on Ythan

By Talpa

A matter of taste

If I had the choice between smoked salmon and tinned salmon, I'd have it tinned. With vinegar.
Harold Wilson. Socialist, Statesman, Prime Minister, Yorkshire-man (1916-1995).

Early this morning, I was dispatched  to seek out some smoked salmon for the family Christmas lunch. I know of no better source than the Old Salmon Fish House in Buchanhaven, (the birthplace of Mrs, the village that is, not the smoke house!), standing at the mouth of the River Ugie.

This is the oldest extant Salmon smokehouse in Scotland having been built in 1585 for the Fifth Earl Marischal, for keeping and preserving his game and fish.

I am always drawn to the harbour when in Peterhead, a reliable source of photographic opportunities. The "extra" shows the Bibby Topaz, a multi-role diving support vessel for the offshore oil industry, looming through the mist.
