When in Fiji, watch Fijians watch Fijians
Cape Town Rugby Sevens
In fairness we had been looking for pizzas, but the Pizzeria was actually a bar and the Rugby Sevens just happened to be on. Fortuitous or what? We were lucky enough to see Scotland demolish England in the Bowl Final and to see Fiji run rings around a surprisingly accomplished USA team in the Plate Final. The competition was eventually won by RSA who beat Argentina, but we were lucky to see that match as the TV was about to be switched off after the Fiji match - we were on holiday weren’t we, so why would we want to be watching TV? This was the first and only TV we have seen in the whole of the resort so they get another star from us.
Earlier we had been more active despite the tropical sun. A “Bush Trek” had taken us to the summit of the main hill on the island and we had views out to the scattered reefs and islands that pepper this part of the Pacific. The views were stunning and confirmed how remote the island is and how lucky we were to be here. On the way back we bumped in to Tom Hanks doing research for Cast Away 2. We exchanged email addresses and did the compulsory “selfie” for Tom, before heading down. Later there was swimming, snorkelling, kayaking and the totally pointless paddle boarding. I mean, why would you? There are many more interesting and comfortable ways to get around on the water some using craft you can build in your own garage. And no, Stewart and Catriona, we didn’t fall in.
Dinner was “Japanese Fusion” in the award winning 1808 Restaurant. Basically Japanese and Chinese food cooked in sea water and coconut milk. Can be salty but usually extremely tasty.
Very easy to relax in this stunning situation. Sleeping better than we have for years. Only the appearance of a few mosquito bites precludes inclusion in our list of “Best Places we have EVER visited!”
PS I lied about Tom Hanks. Just wanted to make the story a bit more interesting.
