Happy Birthday
Today is my birthday, and while the number of candles needed to properly celebrate would be large and create quite a smoky flame, that's not what is happening here. This is a shot of the oil cars burning across the Willamette River. Can you see the flames?
We had just finished a birthday breakfast at John Street Cafe, and walked outside to see drifts of pretty dark clouds? fog? smoke! overhead. So we headed south towards the river to check it out. Thoughts of out-of-control citizens came to mind and made for excited comments from all the people we found heading in the same direction.
Turns out the tanks were filled with hot asphalt and a truck ran into the side of the train carrying them. I don't think the train was moving, and I don't imagine I have all the details quite right either.
But I did go on to have a perfectly nice birthday, grateful my tax dollars support a fine fire department.
