wally tiles
This is a section of a upper wall in a gift shop in Gourock which was originally a butchers. These decorated tiles are common in Glasgow and the west of Scotland, often on the walls of closes ( communal entry to tenement flats), often on the walls of food shops both to permit ease of cleaning and reduce fire risk. In the port towns of Greenock and Gourock they often have a maritime theme as seen here. James Duncan was a designer who produced very ornate tiling still held in high regard and often found in the upmarket closes and stairwells of high priced property in the west end of Glasgow
