Happy Hanukkah....
While Christmas is everywhere across the city of Manchester at the moment, we should remember that the Jewish community of the city is in the midst of celebrating their Festival of Lights, Hanukkah. Manchester has one of the largest Jewish communities in the country though, unless they are part of the orthodox branch of the community, they merge into the general population. They have been in the city for many years. A lot arrived in the nineteenth century escaping pogroms in Europe. They settled in Cheetham Hill but, as they prospered, they have spread throughout the city but still have a big presence in the leafy suburbs between Cheetham Hill and Prestwich.
At the moment, the Hanukkah candelabra is being lit, lamp by lamp on the edge of the Christmas Market in Albert Square. I believe the last day of the celebration is tomorrow so Happy Hanukkah to any Jewish blippers who come across this post.
