'Cut the Rug'

To 'cut the rug' usually means to be a good dancer or have an energetic dance , it seems the phrase may have two possible origins 1. That when dancing moved on from waltzing and minuets the more vigorous activity started to wreak havoc with the floor coverings in the spaces where previously more sedate movement had taken place
or
2. That during the era of prohibition in the USA , to make a space for dancing in a drinking club that could quickly be covered over a square was cut in the rug - must admit I tend to believe the second suggestion more as not sure why anyone would choose to dance on a carpeted area ? But both interesting I think - tomorrow 'under the thumb'
