Pigeon Fanciers

Keeping pigeons is a popular hobby here in Jordan. Around about dusk the pigeon fanciers open their lofts and let them out. The skies are full of different flocks swooping and circling in tight arcs, etching silhouettes against the sunset. Often the birds are trained to the muezzin's call to prayer which sends them straight home. In the Middle East pigeon keeping dates back as far as 1150 when the Sultan of Baghdad established a pigeon post system.
