Sign of the times

During recent refurbishments a number of shops in Moringside Edinburgh have had their frontage removed exposing the original shop and in some cases the original shop sign. Previous uncovered original signs have included a shop adjacent to the old Morningside station which in a lovely Roman type face read TRAVELING REQUISITES. It's a shame modern shop signs are so mass produced in plastic making all high streets look the same. Older signs were hand crafted with a proper regard to letter spacing and design producing rows of shops with character and a friendly feel. Maybe councils should encourage the use of professional hand painted shop signs, maybe not on Princess St or George St but just at the local shop level. I also think these old signs should have a preservation order applied to them.

Apologies for the wee rant.
