I weewee.
The artist trying to avoid what happened to me a couple of weeks ago.
Before going to the Ai Wei Wei exhibition I was imagining it to be dry conceptual art about Chinese governmental oppression. What I got was room after room of visually stunning and beautiful pieces sticking a wry finger up at Chinese governmental oppression and insanity. The relentlessness of the system's attempts to break this man and silence him are astonishing and appalling, yet each time he hits back with a poignant work of beauty.
The photo is from a piece about his sudden imprisonment for 81 days where he was in solitary confinement and shadowed 24 hours a day by two guards never more than two feet away. The light was never switched off as well.
Afterwards we nipped around the corner to see a mixed show my dad was in. The cream of the British art scene? Hmm. When you see 150 small anonymous works, especially straight after something like AWW they look en masse like a sunday amateur art club show. On the up side my dad's and step mother's pieces were as good, if not better than, any I've seen of theirs in a while.
