Large appetites
All the livestock are in the yards now except for the few South Devons who are still grazing in the field. They are in calf and musn't get overweight as the Herefords tend to do when they are inside. Fat suckler cows are a recipe for difficult calving. These animals in the photograph are bought-in cattle who are being finished so they can be sent to market or the abattoir; even they shouldn't get overweight these days as it is lean meat that the butchers and supermarkets want and the farmer can get penalised for an animal that is too fat.
