Vulcan

The summer holidays are here! Six and half weeks of unadulterated children's entertainment started with a jolly to the excellent air museum at East Fortune.

Whilst traipsing through the wet grass between the assault course and the 'games bit' I fired a shot at this Cold War delta-wing bomber. I've just discovered that this aircraft featured in the so-called 'Longest Bombing Raid in History' when a posse of these bombers flew 8000miles from UK to the Falklands in 1982.

From the NMS site: "XM597 made the headlines when, due to a fractured in-flight refuelling probe, the Vulcan diverted to Rio de Janeiro. After seven days internment the aircraft and crew were released. On the nose can be seen two mission markings and a Brazillian flag commemorating her unscheduled stopover. XM597 flew into East Fortune in 1984.".
