This photo is really about the four very old propelling pencils on the right, which come from a friend's collection of Mordan pencils. Sampson Mordan and his co-inventor John Isaac Hawkins filed the first patent in Great Britain for a metal pencil with an internal mechanism for propelling the graphite "lead" shaft forward during use. These four examples are probably from the late nineteenth century.
