Sherlock's Retirement Cottage
This is East Dean, a little jewel in the heart of the South Downs. I am currently reading a recent Sherlock Holmes novel by James Lovegrove, called Gods of War, set in 1913 just before the outbreak of WW1. The book is written very much in the style of ACD and is, as they say, a 'rattling good yarn', set after Holmes' retirement to this sleepy part of East Sussex. It is made all the more enjoyable, for me, by frequent reference to local landmarks, not least of which is the brilliant Tiger Inn in the picture on the right. A nice little touch is the blue plaque on the 'Holmes Cottage' on the left just behind the tree. See extra pic. It's a lovely place to visit, even without the Holmes angle.
