Late harvest.

This is the large field across the road from where we live. We awakened today to the noise of harvesting made by a huge tractor and reaper.
The grain is shot, as you can see, into a trailer, whilst the srems and leaves are mulched for re-cycling.
In spring the farmer will plough the field, but in the meantime we can expect the flocks of woodpigeons, crows and gulls to feast on the surplus seed that will be lying on the ground.
This will be the sixth consecutive year that the field was set to maize. That surprises me as I was always taught that crops had to be rotated inorder to prevent diseases arising.
That appears to be an old-fashioned view.
The field is fertilised each spring and then liberally fed with cow manure before being ploughed.
It appears to work.
The maize is consistently tall and lush, and very productive.
I think the grain goes to cattle-feed.
